Praying for Venezuela: An Unexpected National Tragedy
Video and Update: Blake and Kathy Penson

Venezuela is located on two fault lines that historically have not resulted in major plate movement. On June 24, 2026, two earthquakes, with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, struck 39 seconds apart at 6:04 p.m. In total, 189 buildings collapsed, many of them filled with occupants. The last major earthquake occurred in 1967 and is the largest earthquakes to strike Venezuela in over a century. Over 500 aftershocks have taken place since June 24—some up to 4.5 magnitude.
Former International Worker, Blake Penson, was able to quickly contact the national president of The Alliance in Venezuela who provided a brief overview of the disaster; explaining that the hardest hit areas were near to the coast in the states of La Guaira, Carabobo, Yaracuy, and Aragua. A smaller city, Moron, is close to the centre of the quakes and The Alliance church in this city is serving as the coordination centre for hot meals and the distribution of basic food supplies, blankets, and medicine.
Already facing economic hardship and rising food prices, millions of Venezuelans are now at even greater risk of hunger. As infrastructure is damaged and livelihoods disrupted, the need for urgent humanitarian support continues to grow.
Please join us in prayer for Venezuela:
- for those who have lost family and friends
- for the provision and protection of the many thousands left homeless, including newly orphaned children
- for FundAlfa in their assessment and distribution through our Venezuelan leaders
- that many would experience Christ's love and come to know Him in a very real way as their Saviour, Provider, and Protector
"God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.... He says 'Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.'" ~ Psalm 46:1-3, 10 1
Please prayerfully join us in supporting our Venezuelan family as they seek to be Christ's hands and feet—His voice answering the cries of so many. The Alliance church in Venezuela is economically poor with few resources. However, they have organized over the years and created a relief and development agency, FundAlfa, for times like this. The Alliance Canada has partnered with them previously in both resourcing and training to help them gain the skills and tools needed to be effective. We are now partnering with them once again in one of their greatest national crises ever. Donations received will go a long way toward purchasing the supplies needed as we partner with the Venezuelan Alliance Church.

The Canadian Foodgrains Bank is raising funds as part of the Humanitarian Coalition in a joint appeal to supporting emergency assistance relief efforts in Venezuela. Between June 25 - July 14, Global Affairs Canada has agreed to match all individual donations made by Canadians, dollar for dollar up to $2 million.
The Alliance Canada, through its membership in the Canadian Foodgrains Bank, participates in the Humanitarian Coalition joint appeal for the Venezuela earthquake. Donations received from individual donors will help in reaching the Government of Canada match and our collective emergency response.
